BY-LAW AMENDMENTS
APPROVED
In July,
the CKSA received notice form Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada that the
by-law amendments that were voted on by mail ballot in the fall of 2005
had been approved.
These amendments were as follows:
1. The
requirement that specified that the Association’s financial records must
be verified by chartered accountants was changed to requiring a
qualified person to do so. This will allow more options for having the
records verified at a lower cost.
2. Katahdin
sheep derived as the result of embryo transplant will now be eligible
for registration. In order to register embryo transplant lambs, the
application must be accompanied by an embryo transplant certificate
completed by the technician who performed the extraction and
implantation, detailing the dates of service, extraction and
implantation, as well as the ram, donor ewe, and recipient ewe. The
recipient ewe need not be a registered ewe but the identification of
that ewe must be reported.
In addition, all embryo transplant lambs must be
parentage verified by DNA genotyping before registration. This is to be
done by means of blood samples drawn from the ram, the donor ewe and the
lamb, by a veterinarian. To avoid the possibility of not being able to
parentage verify a lamb after birth, it is advised that the samples be
taken from the ram and donor ewe at the time of breeding/extraction, if
those animals have not already been genotyped. .
3. The by-law regarding line breeding was amended to
now require that a service ram not be related to the ewe or to her
parents. Formerly, the ram could also not be related to any of the ewe’s
grandparents. This will allow a number of sheep that were formerly
disqualified for line breeding to be registered.
The fourth amendment voted on, which would have
changed the ownership requirement for becoming an inspector, was not
passed by the membership.
Bylaws passed for 2008
Inspectors: After qualifying as an inspector
renewal is not now required for 5 years.
Tagging: Has been expanded to include the use
